We are looking for a Bioethicist to join the Ethics & Society team at DeepMind. The Ethics & Society team is responsible for partnering with DeepMind efforts to consider the downstream implications of our work. We work across all areas of the organisation to consider the short and long-term benefits and risks of projects.

In this role you will be responsible for partnering with our life sciences teams to consider the downstream impacts of our research. You will collaborate with various internal and external partners to build ethical guidelines that ensure that our work is conducted in line with ethics and safety best practices, helping DeepMind to progress towards its mission.

Responsibilities

  • Working as part of an interdisciplinary team to identify and then implement mitigations for ethics and safety risks.
  • Working with internal and external experts to build ethical frameworks, guidelines and best practices for our pioneering research in life sciences.
  • Carrying out literature reviews to understand best practice ethical governance in the area of life sciences.
  • Developing ethics analyses that take into account the benefits and risks of a project. Providing evidence-based recommendations, primarily to guide our teams as they do their research and development.
  • Communicating complex social and ethical topics across a wide range of external stakeholders and internal functional teams.    
  • Assessing the direct and indirect societal implications of research via expert interviews, workshops, or other forms of engagement.
  • Identifying leading external experts to engage with and help validate our work. Where appropriate, developing longer term relationships.

Job Requirements

  • Degree or extensive work experience in areas relevant to the world class study of bioethics, socially responsible science, critical science, science policy, and/or the ethics of fundamental science, pharma or a related field; and with expertise in areas such as, but not limited to, the right to science, opportunities and risks in the life sciences, molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, biosecurity, and bioinformatics.
  • Experience navigating and assessing complex ethical and societal questions, including balancing the benefits and risks of scientific research and applications.
  • Excellent ability to distil sophisticated technical ideas to their essence and communicate them.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating the perspectives and interests of a diverse range of groups and stakeholders, particularly those from historically marginalised communities.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across a range of teams and levels.
  • Experience working within interdisciplinary teams.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in an academic institution, a think tank, or equivalent industry role, or in a role dealing with complex ethical challenges
  • A strong understanding of the challenges and issues in the field of AI Ethics.
